About Me

My photo
I'm a 45 year old mother of 3 boys. I live in a beautiful old house that needs a lot of TLC with my youngest son and 2 dogs. I am working hard at keeping myself healthy and fit by working out and doing a spot of running. I'm a creative person and am passionate about keeping traditional skills alive. I cook, knit, bake, garden, preserve, read, write and am now learning to spin and quilt. Oh and I sometimes swear.....

Swim, Bike, Run, Laugh

Yesterday my postie brought me this surprise present from a dear friend.  Inside there was a wee note that said "When you're crying with pain/fatigue/sores, I hope this makes you smile."  Eeeeeeeek!!!! I think the reality of this is sinking in.  I am reminded of WHW race legend Alan Kay's comment in the DVD where he needs help getting out of the chair at Kinlochleven and says "This is gonna hurt."

I know this is gonna hurt!  But undaunted I read the blurb on the back.  I was just thinking this looks like an interesting book when I got to the bit where he describes lying on a couch with his finisher's medal round his neck and an IV tube in his arm.  Double eeeeeeek!!!!

So, Chapter 1 is called Set Some Goals.  "Your goals should be so big that when you tell your friends and family, they laugh at you."  ACHIEVED!!!!!

Reactions have been mixed to be honest.  Ranging from "I think that's a brilliant goal" to "Can you actually swim?"  I thought long and hard about the type of challenge I wanted to set myself.  I didn't want it to be easy.  I consider myself very lucky to have been given a clean bill of health.  But there are thousands of women out there who didn't get my good diagnosis.  And I want to raise some money to help them.  That's what will motivate me.

So I'll re learn how to swim properly again, I'll get on a bike for the first time in years, I'll get out there to run and figure out a way not to knacker my back.  And if anyone wants to laugh then I hope they're laughing with me.

Thanks Debs.  You really did make me smile xxx
